It is sometimes difficult to strike a balance between making live theatre accessible to all, and yet still be sensitive to the issue of potentially disturbing other audience members. This unfortunately often results in some members of our community not being able to attend live theatre.

But there is a solution, and in order to redress the balance and make theatre available to all, the Royal Canadian Theatre Company – partnering with The City of Surrey – is presenting the second ever ‘Relaxed Performance’ outside Vancouver. ‘Relaxed Performances’ – sometimes called “sensory friendly performances” – are specifically designed to make theatre more welcoming for audience members with autism spectrum disorder, sensory, communication or other intellectual disabilities.

They are also excellent for anyone with babes in arms or toddlers. Sound and lighting cues are adjusted to be less intense; exiting and entering the auditorium is allowed at any time; auditorium lights are never fully turned off; pre-performance the cast explains what’s about to happen and audience noise, movement and even the use of phones or other “fidget devices,” are tolerated.

Since being pioneered by Polka Theatre, a children’s theatre in London, in 2009, relaxed performances have spread around Britain and to the United States – and are now arriving in Canada. RCTC, partnering with the City of Surrey, is proud to be the leaders in Surrey for this wonderful initiative after our successful debut with the first ever Surrey Arts Centre Relaxed Performance in 2017. In addition, this year we are very excited to welcome the Mayday Youth Choir For Neurodiversity to perform with us.

This ‘Relaxed Performance’ is part of the run of ‘Ellie King’s Hansel Gretel and the Strolling Players’, which goes from December 21st – 30th 2018 at Surrey Arts Centre, wheelchair accessible and with plenty of parking.
