Can YOU write a play that only lasts for five minutes but holds an audience’s interest?
And can you do it in just three hours?
We will give you four actors to work with, a fully equipped performance space to present your work, technical, marketing and administrative support – all free!
The overall winner, chosen by the audience, will receive a cash prize and the opportunity to develop their play into a full-length piece to be presented during RCTC’s By the Book staged reading series.
Ten finalists will be drawn from all those submitted.
The challenge is open to all – no age limit and no experience necessary! Ten playwrights will be chosen by ballot from among all those entering this innovative playwriting challenge.
Work will be adjudicated by the audience following performance and a cash prize awarded to the winner.
HOW DOES IT WORK, YOU ASK
On Sunday, June 16th at 11am, a character and a situation will be sent to the 10 selected participants via email. You have until 2pm to write a five-minute play, including the character and situation – any genre.
At 2pm you’ll come to our Studio to meet your actor(s), and we will read through all 10 plays. We will tweak and tech, followed by a break while we ready the Studio for our audience.
Doors will open to the public at 7pm; the show will begin at 7:30pm. Following the performances, during a short break, the audiences will decide on their favourite play. The winner will receive a cash prize, plus the offer that if they develop their piece into a full length play, we will sponsor it during our Staged Reading Series – By the Book.
